What is "Sade Sati"?

Sade Sati happens when Saturn transits (moves over) the place in the sky where the Moon was when you were born.

The term "sade sati" means "Seven and a Half." That's how many years it takes slow moving saturn to move across your birth moon and it's two neighboring houses.

When Saturn enters the sign before your Moon Sign (the constellation the Moon was in when you were born), the first phase of Sade Sati starts. So if your Moon sign is Tuarus, Sade Sati starts when Saturn enters Aries. About 2 and a half years later Saturn moves forward into the same sign as your Moon sign (Taurus in our example) - this is the second phase of Sade Sati. Finally, another 2 and a half years later, he moves into the sign to the aftr of your Moon (Gemini in our example) - this is the third and final 2 and a half year phase of the transit.

People tend to dread this 7.5 year transit, mainly because it is hyped up by unscrupulous astrologers to an audience who doesn't understand much about astrology. Sade Sati can be an excellent or a terrible experience depending on some exact factors. To get the exact effect of each 1/3 of sade-sati (saturn's transit over the natal moon sign) we must do a calculation called "panoti yoga" which references the moons position relative to it's natal position at the exact moment that third of sade-sati begins.

Based on the that lunar position, 4 types of Sade Sati transits happen, 2 of which are good, and 2 of which are bad. A reasonable Vedic astrologer can do these somewhat time consuming calculations and interpretations for you.
